Your Fitness Level Leaves a Chemical Fingerprint in Your Blood And It Predicts Your Risk of Dying We've long known that cardiorespiratory fitness is one of the strongest predictors of how long you'll live: arguably stronger than smoking, hypertension, or high cholesterol. What we haven't understood well is exactly what fitness looks like at a molecular level inside the body. A massive new study published in Circulation: Genomic and Precision Medicine, using UK Biobank data, has now mapped that molecular fingerprint in remarkable detail. Researchers measured cardiorespiratory fitness directly using cycle ergometer testing, then analysed hundreds of thousands of blood samples for metabolites and proteins. The metabolomic analysis alone included over 354,000 participants in the validation stage, one of the largest studies of its kind ever conducted. Higher fitness was consistently linked to lower levels of inflammation markers, triglycerides, and glycolysis byproducts, alongside higher levels of markers related to healthy cholesterol transport and cellular structural maintenance.
