Your Brain May Never Fully Recover from a High-Sugar Diet. New Research Explains Why. You cut out the sugar. You switched to a healthier diet. You are doing everything right. But new research published May 31, 2026, delivers a difficult message: some of the cognitive damage caused by a high-sugar diet may not fully reverse, even after you stop eating it. Researchers at the University of Technology Sydney reviewed findings from 27 previous studies using rodent models. The animals were all fed high-fat, high-sugar diets for at least two weeks. Some rodents were then placed back on normal healthy food, while others continued on the unhealthy diet. Scientists then assessed their cognition. Rodents switched back to a healthy diet performed better on memory tasks than those that stayed on the unhealthy diet. However, memory recovery depended on the composition of the unhealthy diet. Memory recovery was seen in rodents fed a high-fat die, but not in those fed a diet high in sugar alone, or a combined high-fat, high-sugar diet. In other words: the fat damage reversed. The sugar damage did not. Senior author Michael Kendig explained why this may be happening. "High-sugar diets may produce a stronger neuroinflammatory response in the brain than high-fat diets.
