    Why Healthy Habits Are Hard to Maintain: What Parents in Coastal Karnataka Reveal About Teen Lifestyle Challenges Parents understand the importance of healthy eating and regular physical activity for their children. Yet turning that awareness into consistent daily habits remains a growing challenge, according to a new study conducted in Coastal Karnataka, India. Researchers explored how parents view two major risk factors linked to future non-communicable diseases (NCDs), physical inactivity and unhealthy diets, among adolescents. Their findings reveal a complex reality where academic pressure, changing family dynamics, cultural expectations, and environmental influences often make healthy living difficult despite good intentions. Non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, obesity, and hypertension are increasingly affecting populations worldwide. Many of the behaviours that contribute to these conditions begin during adolescence. Poor dietary choices, excessive screen time, and lack of physical activity can create long-term health risks that extend into adulthood. Because parents play a major role in shaping children's routines and habits, understanding their perspectives is essential for designing effective prevention strategies. One of the strongest findings from the study was that most parents were well informed about healthy lifestyles. They recognized the importance of balanced nutrition, limiting junk food, and encouraging regular exercise.
