    Vaping Without Nicotine May Still Harm Your Heart, New Research Suggests Many young people assume that vaping without nicotine is essentially harmless, a way to enjoy flavour without the addictive or harmful effects of nicotine itself. A new ran domised trial published in the Journal of the American Heart Association challenges that assumption directly, at least for one increasingly popular product, the e hookah. Unlike standard e cigarettes, e hookahs are integrated into traditional waterpipes, meaning the vapour passes through water before being inhaled. Despite this difference, research on their cardiovascular effects has remained limited, and it's been unclear how much of the harm comes specifically from nicotine versus other ingredients in the flavoured liquid itself. Researchers at UCLA recruited 16 healthy young adults who regularly smoked hookah but did not smoke cigarettes, average age 26. In a carefully controlled crossover design, each participant completed three separate 30 minute vaping sessions on different days, once with nicotine containing e liquid, once with the same liquid but no nicotine, and once with a sham control session.
