    Two of the World's Deadliest Flowers Could Hold the Key to New Medicines Wolfsbane and larkspur are notorious for their toxicity, capable of causing nerve damage and paralysis at remarkably small doses. Yet these same plants have been used medicinally across cultures for thousands of years, and now researchers have finally cracked open the biochemical process behind one of their most complex and potentially valuable compounds. These plants produce a class of chemicals called diterpenoid alkaloids, compounds so structurally complex that scientists have struggled for decades to fully understand how plants actually construct them. Aconitine, one of the most well known compounds in this family, was first isolated nearly 200 years ago, yet researchers still haven't managed to successfully synthesise it in a laboratory even today. Why this matters medically: Beyond their toxicity, compounds in this family have shown potential applications against pain, malaria, cancer, and agricultural pests. But actually studying and developing these compounds has remained extremely difficult, since plants naturally produce them in tiny quantities, and the biochemical pathway required to make them synthetically had never been fully mapped.
