But a new study presented at ENDO 2026, the Endocrine Society's annual meeting in Chicago, is adding an important and unexpected layer of complexity to this conversation. Complete elimination of sugar may not be as beneficial as assumed. In some cases it may actually cause harm. Researchers from the Dasman Diabetes Institute in Kuwait studied two groups of mice over 16 weeks. Both groups were fed a low-fat diet, but one group received no sucrose at all while the other consumed a moderate amount. Despite maintaining similar body weights the sucrose-free group showed a series of concerning metabolic changes: — Poorer glucose control and insulin resistance — Imbalances in gut microbiota — Intestinal inflammation — Signs of fatty liver disease The group consuming some sugar fared significantly better across every metabolic measure."Completely removing sucrose from a low-fat diet may unexpectedly disrupt gut health and promote inflammation and metabolic dysfunction.
