Supporting Heart Failure Caregivers Actually Saves Money, New Trial Finds Heart failure caregiving takes a genuine toll, physically, emotionally, and financially, on the family members and friends who provide most of this care unpaid. A new randomised trial published in the Journal of the American Heart Association asks a genuinely practical question, does supporting these caregivers directly actually pay for itself? Most patients with heart failure remain in the community throughout their illness, relying heavily on informal caregivers for daily support. If these caregivers weren't available, replacing their care would have cost an estimated 7 billion dollars in 2015, a figure projected to double by 2035. Yet caregivers themselves often neglect their own wellbeing under the strain, and evidence shows many eventually become patients themselves if they don't manage their own stress and self care.
