Sitting Up Straight May Genuinely Improve Your Mood and Decision Making, Without You Even Realising Why The idea that posture affects mood and confidence has been debated for years, popularised by "power pose" research that later faced serious scientific criticism. A new study from McGill University, published in the British Journal of Psychology, offers a more rigorously designed test of this idea, and the results suggest posture really may subtly shape how we feel and behave. Why earlier posture research had problems: Previous studies often directly instructed participants to adopt a particular posture, which raised an obvious concern, were people behaving differently simply because they knew what researchers expected of them, rather than because posture itself was actually having an effect. How this study avoided that problem: Researchers recruited nearly 200 people and cleverly altered posture without ever mentioning it.
