Sharper MRI, Faster Scans: New Antenna Design Could Transform Brain and Eye Imaging Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has become an indispensable tool in modern medicine, helping clinicians diagnose neurological disorders, eye diseases, musculoskeletal injuries, cardiovascular conditions, and cancer without exposing patients to ionizing radiation. Yet, despite continual advances in MRI technology, imaging certain parts of the body, particularly deep brain structures and the eye, remains challenging. Limited signal quality often leads to longer scan times and reduced image resolution. A new study published in Advanced Materials introduces an innovative MRI antenna built using metamaterial technology that could significantly improve image quality while reducing scanning time. Importantly, the design can be integrated into existing MRI systems, potentially accelerating clinical adoption without requiring entirely new scanners. MRI scanners generate images by transmitting radiofrequency (RF) signals into the body while the patient is inside a powerful magnetic field. The returning signals are captured by radiofrequency (RF) coils, commonly referred to as MRI antennas. However, conventional RF coils often struggle to collect strong signals from: Deep brain regions The optic nerve The eye and orbit Other anatomically complex structures This can result in: Lower image resolution Longer examination times Difficulty detecting subtle abnormalities A New Approach Using Metamaterials Researchers from the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine developed a novel MRI antenna by incorporating metamaterials, engineered materials designed to
