Scientists May Have Found a Hidden Switch for Regeneration in Mammals Since Aristotle first posed the question, scientists have struggled to explain why some animals can regrow entire limbs while humans and other mammals simply form scar tissue. New research from Texas A&M University's College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, published in Nature Communications, suggests the answer may not be that mammals lack regenerative capacity at all. It may simply be switched off. When an injury occurs, mammalian tissue typically responds with fibrosis, fibroblast cells rapidly close the wound and form scar tissue. This protects against infection but blocks regrowth of what was lost. Animals capable of true regeneration, such as salamanders, follow a different path. Their cells organise into a structure called a blastema, which becomes the foundation for rebuilding the missing body part. Dr Ken Muneoka and colleagues asked a simple but profound question: could the same fibroblast cells already present at a mammalian injury site be redirected away from scarring and toward this regenerative pathway instead?
