But scientists are still trying to understand exactly why physical activity has such powerful anti-aging effects. Now, researchers from Monash University have identified a key protein in skeletal muscle that may help explain how exercise protects the body from age-related decline. The protein, called NOX4, appears to play an important role in maintaining muscle health, regulating metabolism, and preserving physical function during aging. The findings could eventually lead to new therapies designed to help older adults retain muscle strength and independence, particularly when regular exercise becomes difficult. Aging affects every organ in the body, but one of the most noticeable changes is the gradual loss of muscle mass and strength. This process, known as sarcopenia, can contribute to: • Frailty • Falls and fractures • Reduced mobility • Loss of independence • Increased risk of hospitalization Maintaining healthy muscles is therefore one of the most important factors in healthy aging. Exercise remains the most effective strategy, but researchers want to understand the biological signals that make exercise so beneficial. The new study focused on NOX4, a protein naturally present in skeletal muscle.
