It is supposed to protect you. In Alzheimer's disease, it does the opposite. It gets stuck in a permanent state of attack, damaging the very brain cells it was meant to defend. Scientists at Scripps Research just found the molecular switch responsible. And in early experiments, turning it off protected brain connections from deteriorating. Researchers at Scripps Research identified a molecular mechanism that appears to play a key role in Alzheimer's brain inflammation. Using human Alzheimer's brain cells and other experimental models, the team discovered a chemical change that pushes the brain's immune response into overdrive. The protein at the centre of this is called STING. It normally acts as part of the body's early warning system. In Alzheimer's disease, STING undergoes a chemical modification known as S-nitrosylation, a reaction involving sulphur, oxygen and nitrogen, which makes the protein excessively active, fuelling harmful inflammation. When scientists blocked this specific chemical change in a mouse model of Alzheimer's, something remarkable happened.
