Researchers at Xiamen University in China may have found a key part of that control system. A protein called Menin, made in the hypothalamus, appears to act as a brake on aging. When it declines, as it does naturally with age, inflammation surges, memory falters, bones thin, and lifespan shortens. Restore it, and many of those changes reverse. Even more surprising: a simple amino acid supplement improved memory in older mice within three weeks. The hypothalamus is a small but commanding brain region. It regulates hormones, metabolism, temperature, sleep, and stress. Scientists increasingly believe it may also regulate the pace of aging itself.
