Scientists Discover That Bone Marrow Cells Quietly Replace Brain Cells as We Age Microglia, the brain's resident immune cells, have long been thought to form during early embryonic development and remain largely self sustaining throughout life, with minimal input from the rest of the body's blood forming system. A new study published in Nature challenges this long standing view directly, revealing that in aging humans, cells originating from bone marrow quietly infiltrate the brain and become genuine, functioning microglia. Why this question matters: Microglia play a central role in brain health, immune defence, and increasingly, in neurodegenerative disease. In mice, research has consistently shown these cells are established during embryonic development and maintained with little contribution from adult blood forming tissue. Whether this same pattern holds true in humans has remained genuinely unclear, though some earlier evidence hinted that bone marrow derived cells might contribute to the human microglial population in certain individuals.
