    Scientists Build a Massive Library of Patient Tumours to Find Better Cancer Treatments Cancer research has long relied heavily on cancer cell lines grown in labs, but these lines have real limitations, they don't fully capture how diverse tumours actually are, and they've been artificially adapted to lab conditions over years of culturing. A major new study published in Nature introduces a far more realistic alternative, hundreds of "mini tumours" grown directly from actual patient cancer tissue, and uses them to map exactly which genes different cancers depend on to survive. What makes this resource different: Researchers derived 256 tumour organoids, three dimensional lab grown cultures created directly from patient tumour tissue, spanning colorectal, oesophageal, ovarian, pancreatic, and stomach cancers. Unlike standard cancer cell lines, these organoids retain a much closer genetic resemblance to the actual tumour they came from, and crucially, each one comes with detailed clinical information about the patient it originated from, cancer stage, prior treatment, and clinical history. Confirming these mini tumours are genuinely faithful copies: Researchers compared each organoid's genetic makeup directly against the patient's original tumour sample.
