Researchers have discovered an unusual mechanical property in ordinary rice grains and used it to create a new type of self-adapting material that can respond differently to gentle movements and sudden impacts. The breakthrough could pave the way for safer robots, smarter protective equipment, and advanced engineering materials that adjust their behavior automatically, without electronics, sensors, or batteries. The findings were published by an international team led by the University of Birmingham. Most materials become stronger when subjected to rapid forces. Rice behaves differently. Scientists found that tightly packed rice grains actually become weaker when compressed quickly. When pressure is applied slowly, rice grains maintain relatively strong internal support structures. However, under rapid compression, friction between the grains decreases, weakening the network of forces holding the material together. This unusual phenomenon is known as rate softening. While rare in nature, researchers realized it could be used as a valuable engineering tool. Rather than treating rice's unusual behavior as a scientific curiosity, the team used it as a design principle. Researchers combined rice-based granular structures with materials such as sand, which behave in the opposite way and become stronger under rapid force.
