The findings raise the possibility that these popular medications may target something deeper than food cravings. They may be affecting the brain pathways that drive addictive behavior itself. GLP-1 receptor agonists were originally developed to help control blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes. In recent years, they have become widely known for their ability to promote significant weight loss. But doctors began noticing an unexpected trend. Some patients reported that after starting these medications, they lost interest not only in food but also in alcohol, cigarettes, and other addictive substances. Researchers wondered whether these observations reflected a real biological effect. To find out, scientists examined electronic health records from more than 606,000 veterans with type 2 diabetes. Among participants who did not have a substance use disorder at the beginning of the study, those taking GLP-1 medications were significantly less likely to develop one during follow-up.
