One Cell. 170 Billion Neurons. Scientists Just Found the Rule That Makes It Work. Every neurodevelopmental disorder including autism, schizophrenia, lissencephaly, holoprosencephaly, involves cells ending up in the wrong place. The question that has sat underneath all of it, largely unanswered, is deceptively simple: how does a single fertilised cell produce 170 billion precisely positioned neurons in the first place? A study published in Neuron this month proposes a mechanism that is, on reflection, elegant and clinically worth understanding. The dominant model for decades has been morphogen gradients — chemical signals that diffuse across developing tissue and tell cells where they are based on concentration. The model works well in small systems. The brain is not a small system. Chemical gradients dissipate with distance. In a structure that will ultimately contain billions of cells across centimetres of tissue, a gradient-only model cannot reliably deliver positional information to every cell with the precision neurodevelopment requires.
