Many survivors develop heart failure months or years later because the injured heart struggles to repair itself. Despite major advances in emergency cardiac care, doctors still lack effective treatments that can fully prevent the long-term structural damage that follows a heart attack. Now, researchers from The University of Osaka, Japan, have reported a promising new approach that could help damaged hearts heal more effectively. In a new study, scientists found that delivering a carefully selected combination of five therapeutic mRNAs directly to damaged heart tissue significantly improved recovery after a heart attack in mice. The findings, published in Small Science, suggest that future mRNA-based therapies may help reduce heart failure and improve survival following cardiac injury. A heart attack occurs when blood flow to part of the heart is blocked, causing heart muscle cells to die. However, the damage does not end when blood flow is restored. Following a heart attack, the heart experiences several harmful processes simultaneously: • Inflammation • Scar tissue formation • Loss of heart muscle cells • Reduced blood supply to damaged tissue • Progressive weakening of the heart muscle This combination of problems often leads to heart failure.
