One of the biggest questions after an operation is whether every cancer cell has been removed or whether microscopic traces remain hidden in the body. Researchers at Mass General Brigham Cancer Institute have developed an ultrasensitive blood test that may help answer that question with remarkable accuracy. The test, called HPV-DeepSeek, can detect tiny fragments of viral DNA released by HPV-related head and neck cancers, potentially helping doctors identify which patients need additional treatment and which patients may be able to avoid unnecessary therapy. The findings could represent an important step toward more personalized cancer care. HPV-associated head and neck cancers are among the fastest-growing cancer types worldwide. These cancers develop when infection with the human papillomavirus (HPV) triggers abnormal cell growth in areas such as the throat, tonsils, and base of the tongue. After surgery, doctors typically decide whether patients need radiation or chemotherapy based on clinical factors such as: • Tumor size • Lymph node involvement • Surgical margins • Pathology findings While helpful, these factors cannot directly determine whether microscopic cancer cells remain in the body.
