    Low-Dose Atropine Eye Drops Slow Childhood Myopia Progression, Major UK Trial Finds Published by TALMedora Editorial | Ophthalmology | Paediatrics | Child Health Childhood myopia is rising rapidly across the world, with experts warning that today's children are becoming nearsighted at younger ages and progressing to higher levels of myopia than previous generations. While glasses and contact lenses correct vision, they do not stop the underlying progression of myopia. As myopia worsens, the risk of serious eye diseases later in life, including retinal detachment, glaucoma, cataracts, and myopic macular degeneration, increases substantially. Now, a major UK clinical trial has provided strong evidence that a simple daily eye drop may help slow that progression. Researchers found that low-dose atropine eye drops significantly reduced the worsening of myopia in children while remaining safe and well tolerated over a two-year period. Myopia, or nearsightedness, occurs when the eye grows too long from front to back, causing distant objects to appear blurry. Although glasses can correct vision, they do not address the excessive eye growth that drives myopia progression.
