Largest Genetic Study Identifies the First Robust Genetic Risk Loci for Borderline Personality Disorder Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a complex psychiatric condition characterized by emotional dysregulation, unstable interpersonal relationships, impulsivity, and recurrent crises. Although family and twin studies have long suggested a substantial genetic contribution, robust genetic risk variants had remained elusive. A landmark genome-wide association study (GWAS), published in Nature Genetics, has now identified the first reproducible genetic loci associated with BPD, marking an important advance in understanding the biological basis of the disorder. Researchers analyzed genetic data from more than one million controls and over 12,000 individuals with BPD, making this the largest genetic study of BPD to date. The study identified: 11 genomic loci associated with BPD. Nine functional genes located within or near these regions that may contribute to disease susceptibility.
