Just 4 Doses of a Diabetes Drug Cut Kidney Injury Risk in Half After Heart Surgery Acute kidney injury remains one of the most common and frustrating complications following cardiac surgery, affecting anywhere from 2% to 50% of patients depending on how it's measured, with no medication previously identified to reliably prevent it. A new randomised trial published in JAMA suggests a surprisingly simple solution, a short course of a widely used diabetes medication, dapagliflozin. Researchers conducted this multicentre, placebo controlled trial across two academic medical centres and five community hospitals in the Netherlands, enrolling 784 adults undergoing elective cardiac surgery. Participants were randomly assigned to receive either dapagliflozin, 10 milligrams once daily, or a placebo, starting the day before surgery and continuing through the second day after surgery, just four total doses. Over the 7 days following surgery, acute kidney injury occurred
