Your gut and brain are having a completely different conversation. New research published May 31, 2026, shows that intermittent fasting does not simply reduce calorie intake. It triggers coordinated biological changes in both the gut microbiome and the brain, changes that may determine whether weight loss actually lasts. Researchers studied 25 adults with obesity in China. Using stool samples, blood tests, and brain MRI scans, they tracked what happened inside participants' bodies during a structured intermittent fasting programme. The results were striking on two fronts simultaneously. By the end of the intervention, participants had lost an average of 7.6 kilograms, about 7.8% of their starting body weight. They also had measurable reductions in blood pressure, fasting glucose, total cholesterol, LDL, and liver enzyme activity. But the brain scans told an equally important story. The weight loss programme was linked to lower activity in several brain regions involved in appetite and addiction-related behaviour.
