The problem is that these infections are often detected too late. Now, researchers at the University of Waterloo in Canada have developed a new monitoring platform that could transform neurocritical care by detecting infections almost in real time. The system, called NeuroSense, continuously monitors cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flowing through brain drainage systems commonly used in intensive care units (ICUs). By identifying early warning signs of infection, the technology could help doctors intervene faster, potentially preventing severe complications and saving lives. Every year, approximately 25,000 patients in the United States alone require brain drains due to traumatic brain injuries, hydrocephalus, brain hemorrhages, and other neurological conditions. Up to 20 percent of these patients develop infections, which can lead to meningitis, permanent neurological damage, disability, prolonged hospital stays, and even death. Currently, clinicians rely on periodic laboratory testing of cerebrospinal fluid samples. These tests are labor-intensive and are often performed only once every one or two days, creating delays in diagnosis. Researchers believed there had to be a better way.
