Diabetes at a Normal BMI. Here's How I Explain It to Patients. A patient of mine developed diabetes at just 26 years old. Her weight was 53 kilograms, her height 164 centimetres, giving her a BMI of 19.7. For reference, her ideal weight would have been around 64 kilograms. She was actually below her ideal weight, not above it. So the question naturally comes up. If insulin resistance is the cause of diabetes, and there's an ideal weight, why did she develop diabetes at all? Her numbers told the real story.
