COVID-19 Vaccination Linked to Lower Risk of Heart Attacks and Strokes, New Study Finds Research Suggests Benefits Extend Beyond Preventing Severe Infection As COVID-19 transitions from a global emergency to an ongoing public health challenge, researchers continue to uncover the long-term health benefits associated with vaccination. A new study published in JAMA Internal Medicine suggests that COVID-19 vaccination may offer significant protection against serious cardiovascular complications, including heart attacks, strokes, and other major cardiac events linked to infection. The findings add to growing evidence that vaccination does more than reduce the risk of hospitalization and death from COVID-19. It may also help protect the cardiovascular system from some of the virus's most serious downstream effects. Although COVID-19 is primarily known as a respiratory infection, researchers have learned that the virus can affect multiple organ systems, including the heart and blood vessels. Previous studies have shown that COVID-19 infection can increase the risk of inflammation, abnormal blood clotting, heart attacks, strokes, heart failure, and other cardiovascular complications. These risks can persist long after the initial infection has resolved and may contribute substantially to the long-term health burden associated with the virus. Preventing infection or reducing disease severity has therefore become an important strategy not only for protecting the lungs but also for safeguarding cardiovascular health.
