    Could Your Genes Hold the Secret to Healthy Aging? Why do some people stay healthy well into their 80s and 90s while others develop chronic illnesses much earlier? A new study suggests that part of the answer may lie in rare genetic variations passed down through long-lived families. Researchers studying families with a history of exceptional longevity have identified several rare genetic variants that may help delay age-related diseases and extend the number of years people live in good health. Previous research from the Leiden Longevity Study found that people with long-lived parents developed heart disease, diabetes, and other cardiometabolic conditions about 13 years later than those whose parents had average lifespans.
