Could Weight-Loss Drugs Improve Male Fertility? Emerging Research Suggests They Might GLP-1 Medications May Offer Unexpected Benefits Beyond Weight Loss GLP-1 medications such as semaglutide have transformed the treatment of obesity and type 2 diabetes. Their benefits for weight reduction, blood sugar control, and cardiovascular health are now well established. Emerging research suggests these medications may have another important effect: improving male reproductive health. Preliminary findings presented at the Endocrine Society's annual meeting indicate that GLP-1 therapies may help increase testosterone levels and improve sperm quality in men living with obesity, a population known to be at higher risk of fertility challenges. While researchers caution that larger clinical trials are needed, the findings are adding to growing evidence that metabolic health and reproductive health are closely connected. Obesity affects far more than body weight. Research has consistently shown that excess body fat can disrupt hormone balance, reduce testosterone production, impair sperm quality, and negatively affect fertility. One reason is that fat tissue contains enzymes that convert testosterone into estrogen. Increased fat mass can therefore lower circulating testosterone levels, affecting libido, energy, muscle mass, and reproductive function. Chronic inflammation, insulin resistance, and other metabolic disturbances associated with obesity may further contribute to hormonal dysfunction. As obesity rates continue to rise globally, fertility specialists and endocrinologists are increasingly recognizing obesity as an important and potentially rev
