    Could Ozempic-Like Drugs Protect Bones While Helping Patients Lose Weight? Large Real-World Study Finds Lower Fracture Risk Among Semaglutide Users For years, clinicians have worried that significant weight loss could come with an unintended consequence: weaker bones. Weight reduction, particularly in older adults and people with chronic diseases, has often been associated with decreased bone density and a potentially higher risk of fractures. As newer weight-loss medications such as semaglutide have become increasingly popular, questions have emerged about their long-term effects on skeletal health. Now, new research presented at ENDO 2026 suggests the relationship may be more complex than previously thought. Researchers found that adults with type 2 diabetes taking semaglutide experienced fewer bone fractures than patients using several other commonly prescribed weight-loss medications, despite achieving greater reductions in body weight. Bone health is a major concern in people living with diabetes. Individuals with type 2 diabetes often face an elevated risk of fractures due to a combination of aging, metabolic changes, reduced mobility, and other health complications. At the same time, obesity itself places additional strain on joints and contributes to multiple chronic diseases.
