    Could Copper Help the Brain Fight Alzheimer's? Now, researchers from Monash University in Australia have uncovered a promising new approach. In laboratory studies, a copper-based compound helped restore the brain's natural waste-removal system, reduced Alzheimer's-related protein buildup, and improved memory performance. While the findings are still in the preclinical stage, scientists believe the research could open an entirely new pathway for treating Alzheimer's disease. One of the hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease is the accumulation of amyloid-beta plaques, sticky protein deposits that build up between brain cells. Under normal circumstances, the brain continuously removes these proteins through a highly specialized protective network called the blood-brain barrier. The blood-brain barrier acts as a security checkpoint, controlling what enters and leaves the brain. Embedded within this barrier are microscopic transport proteins known as P-glycoprotein (P-gp) pumps, which help remove harmful substances, including amyloid-beta. In Alzheimer's disease, these pumps become less effective. As a result, toxic proteins accumulate faster than they can be cleared, contributing to progressive memory loss and cognitive decline.
