    Could Chronic Wasting Disease One Day Cross Species? Although there has never been a confirmed case of Chronic Wasting Disease in humans, new research published in *Science advances* suggest that the disease may be biologically more complex than previously understood. Researchers found evidence that infectious prions can sometimes persist and spread even when infected animals show no obvious signs of illness, raising important questions about disease evolution, surveillance, and long-term public health preparedness. Chronic Wasting Disease belongs to a group of rare disorders known as prion diseases. Unlike bacteria or viruses, prion diseases are caused by misfolded proteins that trigger normal proteins in the brain to adopt abnormal shapes. Over time, these protein accumulations damage brain tissue, leading to progressive neurological decline and death. In affected animals, symptoms may include: * Weight loss * Behavioral changes * Excessive salivation * Difficulty walking * Loss of coordination * Progressive weakness The disease is always fatal. Over the past two decades, CWD has expanded across multiple regions of North America, making it an increasing concern for wildlife management and public health authorities.
