    Could Alzheimer’s Disease Begin Earlier Than We Thought? New Research Points to a Hidden Cellular Mechanism For decades, Alzheimer’s disease research has largely focused on amyloid beta plaques: protein deposits that accumulate in the brains of affected individuals. While these plaques remain a hallmark of the disease, treatments aimed at removing them have produced only limited clinical benefits. Now, researchers at the University of California, Riverside have proposed a new explanation that may help connect two of Alzheimer’s most important biological features: amyloid beta and tau proteins. Their findings suggest that Alzheimer’s disease may begin when amyloid beta interferes with the normal function of tau inside neurons, potentially disrupting critical cellular processes long before extensive brain damage becomes visible. Alzheimer’s disease is characterized by the accumulation of two abnormal proteins: amyloid beta and tau.
