Could a Natural Food Compound Improve Vaccine Responses in Older Adults? Pilot Study Suggests Promise As people age, the immune system gradually becomes less effective, reducing its ability to respond to infections and vaccines. This age-related decline, known as immunosenescence, can leave some older adults with weaker protection even after recommended vaccinations. A pilot study published in Aging Cell suggests that spermidine, a naturally occurring compound found in foods such as wheat germ, mushrooms, parmesan, and cheddar cheese, may help improve vaccine responses in some older adults. Researchers from the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine and the University of Oxford enrolled 40 healthy adults aged 65 years and older who had received their third COVID-19 vaccine dose. Participants received either: 6 mg of spermidine daily, or A placebo for 13 weeks following vaccination.
