One of its most effective survival tricks is hiding from the immune system. For years, scientists believed that when cancer cells switched off a key immune-recognition signal, they became much harder to destroy. A new study suggests the opposite may sometimes be true. Researchers have discovered that when cancer cells use one of their most common escape mechanisms, they may unintentionally expose themselves to attack from another powerful arm of the immune system. The findings could reshape how scientists think about cancer immunotherapy and may open new opportunities for treating difficult-to-kill tumors. How Cancer Hides? The immune system constantly scans the body for abnormal cells. To do this, immune cells rely on molecular "ID cards" displayed on cell surfaces. One important group of these markers is known as MHC Class I. Many cancers learn to reduce or completely eliminate MHC Class I from their surfaces. By doing so, they become less visible to CD8 "killer" T cells, one of the immune system's primary cancer-fighting weapons. This strategy has long been viewed as a major reason why some tumors resist treatment. Scientists from Baylor College of Medicine and collaborating institutions found that this escape strategy may come with an unexpected cost.
