Can Your Diet Influence How Well Cancer Immunotherapy Works? New Nature Study Suggests It Might For years, scientists have known that both obesity and the gut microbiome can influence how patients respond to cancer immunotherapy. One observation has puzzled researchers: despite obesity increasing the risk of many cancers, patients with a higher body mass index (BMI) sometimes respond better to immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) than leaner patients. A new study published in Nature may help explain this paradox. Researchers found that it may not be obesity itself that improves immunotherapy outcomes, but rather the interaction between diet and the gut microbiome. In mouse models, specific dietary patterns reshaped gut bacteria in ways that enhanced anti-tumor immune responses and improved the effectiveness of immunotherapy. Previous clinical studies have reported that patients with higher BMI often experience better responses to immune checkpoint inhibitors, particularly in cancers such as lung cancer and melanoma. Until now, scientists were unsure why. The new research suggests that diet quality and the gut microbiome may play a much larger role than body weight alone. To investigate, researchers designed 12 different diets representing a wide range of eating patterns, including: Mediterranean Japanese Western Ketogenic Vegan High-fat High-fiber diets Mice followed these diets before receiving anti-PD-1 immunotherapy, one of the most widely used immune checkpoint inhibitors. The researchers also analyzed: Body composition Blood immune cells Gut microbiome composition Tumor growth Treatment response Microbial metabolites The Gut Microbiome Was the Key Although several obesity-associated diets improved responses to immunotherapy, the benefit was not directly link
