Can Brain Stimulation Help Reduce Impulsivity in Borderline Personality Disorder? TALMedora Mental Health Desk Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is one of the most challenging psychiatric conditions to treat. Characterized by emotional instability, impulsive behaviour, unstable relationships and a heightened risk of self-harm, the disorder can significantly affect quality of life. While psychotherapy remains the cornerstone of treatment, researchers continue to search for new approaches that directly target the brain circuits involved in emotional regulation and impulsive decision-making. A new proof-of-concept study published in Scientific Reports suggests that a non-invasive brain stimulation technique known as repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) may help reduce impulsivity in people living with BPD. Impulsivity is one of the defining features of Borderline Personality Disorder. Patients may struggle with: * Sudden emotional reactions * Risk-taking behaviours * Impulsive spending * Substance misuse * Self-harm behaviours * Difficulty delaying gratification These symptoms can lead to serious personal, social and clinical consequences. Researchers believe that many of these difficulties may arise from disrupted communication between brain regions responsible for emotional processing and cognitive control.
