Can AI Help Manage Diseases Like a Doctor? New Study Suggests It May Be Closer Than We Think Artificial intelligence has already demonstrated impressive abilities in recognizing symptoms and suggesting possible diagnoses. Now researchers are exploring whether AI can assist with an even more complex challenge: managing patients over time. A new study published in Nature evaluated an advanced AI system called AMIE (Articulate Medical Intelligence Explorer), developed by researchers from Google DeepMind and Google Research. The study examined whether AI could support clinical decision-making across multiple patient visits, including treatment planning, monitoring disease progression, medication decisions, and follow-up care. Unlike traditional medical chatbots, the system was designed to simulate ongoing patient management. It incorporated current clinical guidelines and medication references while conducting conversations that resembled real-world primary care consultations. Researchers compared the AI system with 21 primary care physicians using 100 virtual clinical scenarios modeled on UK clinical practice guidelines.
