Ultra-processed foods are products that undergo multiple industrial processing steps and often contain ingredients rarely used in home cooking. Examples include: * Packaged snacks * Soft drinks * Instant noodles * Processed meats * Sweetened breakfast cereals * Frozen ready-to-eat meals * Commercial baked goods These products are typically designed to be convenient, affordable, shelf-stable and highly palatable. In many countries, ultra-processed foods now account for a substantial proportion of daily calorie intake. Previous studies have consistently linked high consumption of ultra-processed foods with increased risks of: * Obesity * Type 2 diabetes * Cardiovascular disease * Certain cancers * Premature mortality Traditionally, many experts believed these risks were primarily driven by poor nutritional composition, including excessive sugar, sodium, unhealthy fats and refined carbohydrates.
