    A THC Based Medication Made PTSD Nightmares Disappear Completely for a Third of Patients Nightmares are among the most distressing symptoms of PTSD, causing people to relive traumatic events vividly during sleep, often night after night. Existing medications have offered only limited relief for this specific symptom, and no medication has yet been specifically approved for trauma related nightmares. A new randomised controlled trial published in Nature Medicine suggests a prescription cannabis derived medication may finally offer meaningful help. Why nightmares are so hard to treat in PTSD: In PTSD, the brain has difficulty properly processing overwhelming traumatic memories, causing them to intrude involuntarily, both during waking hours and during sleep. Antidepressants and certain blood pressure medications are sometimes used, but they often do little specifically for the nightmares themselves.
