A Second Major HIV Vaccine Breakthrough, Published the Same Day Just as researchers at Scripps reported a major step toward an HIV vaccine, a second team, from University of Pennsylvania, Duke, and Columbia, published a complementary breakthrough in Nature, June 30, 2026, targeting a different but equally critical part of the virus. While the Scripps study focused on one class of broadly neutralising antibodies, this study targets what's known as the V2 apex, a specific, vulnerable region on the HIV virus that certain naturally occurring broadly neutralising antibodies are known to attack effectively. The challenge has always been the same: getting the right rare immune cells to recognise this target and develop into mature, broadly protective antibodies. This first step, called priming, has been a major bottleneck. Researchers designed a novel, modified HIV protein called CAP256.OPT4, specifically engineered to prime the right im
