    A New Minimally Invasive Procedure May Offer Long-Lasting Relief for Knee Osteoarthritis Emerging Evidence Suggests Genicular Artery Embolization Could Bridge the Gap Between Injections and Knee Replacement Knee osteoarthritis remains one of the leading causes of chronic pain, disability, and reduced mobility worldwide. For millions of patients, treatment options often follow a familiar path: lifestyle modifications, physiotherapy, pain medications, injections, and eventually knee replacement surgery. However, many individuals fall into a treatment gap where conservative therapies no longer provide sufficient relief, yet surgery is either medically unsuitable or not preferred by the patient. New research published in Radiology highlights a promising minimally invasive intervention known as Genicular Artery Embolization (GAE) that may provide durable pain relief and improved function without the need for joint replacement. Traditionally, osteoarthritis has been viewed primarily as a disease of cartilage degeneration. Increasing evidence now suggests that chronic inflammation and abnormal blood vessel growth around the joint also play a significant role in pain generation. These newly formed blood vessels are often accompanied by sensory nerve growth, creating a pathway that can amplify pain signals and sustain inflammation within the knee. Genicular Artery Embolization is designed to target this process. The procedure involves guiding a small catheter through the vascular system to the arteries supplying the inflamed areas around the knee.
