A New Bedside Tool Could Help Predict Vitamin B1 Deficiency in the ICU, Before It Becomes a Problem Vitamin B1, also known as thiamine, is essential for how the body produces energy at a cellular level. In critically ill patients, deficiency in this simple vitamin has been linked to worse clinical outcomes. Yet identifying which ICU patients are actually at risk has remained genuinely difficult, since no validated bedside tool has existed to flag high risk individuals early. A new study published in Scientific Reports addresses this gap directly. Researchers followed 340 critically ill patients across two medical centres, using their data to build and then test a prediction tool. Patients were split into a training group and a separate validation group to properly test how well the tool worked on patients it hadn't been built from. Vitamin B1 deficiency was found in 16.2% of critically ill patients, a meaningful proportio
