A Major Trial Just Found Thrombectomy Doesn't Help for Smaller Stroke Blockages, and May Cause More Harm Mechanical thrombectomy, physically removing a blood clot using a catheter, has become a genuine breakthrough for treating large vessel strokes. But whether the same procedure helps patients with strokes caused by smaller, more distal blockages has remained uncertain. A new randomised trial published in JAMA offers a clear, and somewhat sobering, answer. The trial: The DISCOUNT trial enrolled 244 adults with acute ischaemic stroke caused specifically by medium or distal vessel occlusion, smaller, more fragile blood vessels than those typically treated with thrombectomy. Conducted across 22 comprehensive stroke centres in France, patients were randomly assigned to receive either thrombectomy plus standard medical treatment, or medical treatment alone.
