A Decades Old Compound May Offer a Genuinely Different Way to Treat Obesity, By Burning More Energy, Not Just Reducing Appetite GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, and Zepbound have transformed obesity treatment, but they work almost entirely by reducing how much a person eats, and this approach carries real tradeoffs, including nausea, nutritional deficiencies, and loss of muscle mass. A new study published in Science Advances explores a genuinely different strategy, increasing how much energy the body actually burns, and the results are notably promising. The core idea behind this different approach: As the study's senior author put it, body weight responds to two levers, taking in fewer calories, or spending more energy. GLP-1 drugs work almost entirely on the first lever. This research team decided to go after the second. The compound, and where it came from: The study focuses on a molecule called TOFA (5-tetradecyloxy-2-furoic acid), first discovered in the 1970s. TOFA belongs to a class of compounds called ACC inhibitors, which reduce the body's production of lipids like cholesterol and triglycerides. Several ACC inhibitors have reached mid-stage clinical trials previously, but none has been approved for treating metabolic disease, partly because
