83% Remission in High-Risk Leukemia: Researchers Report Encouraging Results From New Dual-Drug Strategy For patients with one of the most aggressive forms of acute myeloid leukemia (AML), treatment options often run out quickly. Even when targeted drugs initially work, the disease frequently returns. For many patients, the only realistic path to long-term survival is reaching stem cell transplantation before the leukemia relapses. Now, researchers in Hong Kong have reported promising results from a novel two-drug approach that may help more patients reach that crucial milestone. Around one-third of AML patients carry mutations in a gene called FLT3. These mutations act like a stuck accelerator pedal, continuously sending growth signals to leukemia cells. Patients with FLT3-mutated AML typically face: • Faster disease progression • Higher relapse rates • Greater treatment resistance • Poorer long-term survival While FLT3-targeted medicines have improved outcomes, relapse remains a major obstacle.
